How to check if someone has been watching porn

So you have your suspicions that someone has been watching porn and you want evidence. Here are some steps you can take to find out. Before you go looking, stop and think about how you are going to deal with what you might find, especially in the case of children. There is some excellent guidance here

Internet History

The simplest way is to check the browsing history on that device, but you need to go hunting…

You need to open the web browser, find the options and go through the calendar. Each browser and device is different, but check out this guide. Once you have found the files, you can start to filter them by website address, or by file type (e.g. images)

Things you need to know

  • The name of porn sites, all though many will be quite obvious
  • Look for gaps in the internet history, chances are they will have deleted their internet history afterwards and there will be a sudden period of no history
  • The might use “private browsing” or “incognito mode” – this basically means the web browser doesn’t keep a log of where they have been.

Look for saved file

Many people will save their favourite images or videos into a folder somewhere on the computer for viewing later / offline. Chances are they have hidden this in the depths of some bizarre file structure. Doing some clever searching might help though.

To search for different file types, click “start” and in the search bar type one of these

*.mp4   *.avi;   *.mov   *.jpg

The first 3 are video file formats, the last one is for images. the * is a wildcard and basically says “search for all files which end with .mp4”. Take a look through the search results, filter by date, or filesize to help you hunt them down

Look for other devices

They may suspect that you might go hunting on their “known” devices for this sort of thing, so consider if they have a hidden device somewhere they may try and access the internet from.

Virtual Computers & “Live” computers

OK, so this is a bit technical, and requires the individual to be pretty tech savvy. A virtual computer is where you install a computer within your computer. For example, you turn on your actual computer and it loads up, you then open some software to run a “virtual” computer on the screen. Everything you then do on the virtual computer, stays in the virtual computer. Therefore if you start checking the internet history on the “real” computer, it will always be clean.

A “live” computer is similar, but normally runs from a DVD or a usb stick. So, you turn your computer on, and instead of it loading as normal, you tell it to run some software from the DVD drive. This loads the computer in a normal way, with internet access etc, but the computer just lives in memory. Once powered down, nothing is remembered.

This won’t prove that someone is up to something, and there are lots of excellent and genuine reasons why you use virtual computers / live computers. However, they are an excellent way to keep your tracks hidden.

Use a key logger

So now we get into a little more dodgy ground. You have to be aware of the computer misuse act and other laws such as entrapment etc. But, you could install a key logger on the computer. This will capture every single key stroke and record it for you to view at a later stage. You have to be very careful with this proposal as you are essentially violating someone’s trust. One such example of a key logger is here, if you intend to try this, we suggest testing it out fully yourself first.

Emotional Behaviour

We’ll leave this to the experts, but take a look at these articles which describe a change in behaviour of people that watch porn. Here and here
